Life is getting pretty hectic in these parts. Hectic in some pretty awesome ways, but hectic nonetheless. Due to our super-crazy busy lives, we’re going to start blogging a little differently.
We’re actually planning to update the blog more frequently than we have been, but with shorter posts and more pictures…like micro blogging or some such thing. Of course, we’ll still include Grace’s writing and stories, but we’ll be dropping the “What We’re Up To” and “The Week in Pictures” and whatnot. Instead we’ll be focusing on what Grace is reading and posting pictures more often (but fewer at a time).
We hope you’ll stick with us through the changes! 😀
And please don’t forget that Grace is still raising money for St. Jude’s … she’s doing a great job practicing math with her Mathathon. We’d love your support in helping Grace reach her goal of raising $250 for this great cause.
Here’s what we’ll be doing this week:
In math, we did some “nautical math” today with Perfectly Perilous Math. Grace converted between miles and nautical miles while solving a multi-step word problem. (Had she failed, her whole crew would have mutinied!) We also made an astrolabe and did some goofy angle calculating. Grace is also working on problem solving skills on IXL…those pursuits will continue throughout the week. More fun math stuff? We’ll be looking at water pressure and measurement.
Language Arts is all about The Hobbit this week. We had to do some quick rescheduling of reading materials when I realized the movie comes out this week. Grace is busting her booty to get the book read before we go to see the movie. Not wanting to leave a ton of awesome literary activities behind, we decided to focus on the literature unit stuff after she’s read the whole book…we just don’t have to time to get it read and do all of the activities in one week. 😉 Okay, so it’s not all about The Hobbit. We’ll also be working on grammar, sentence structure, and personal narratives.
Science is going to be full of experimenting fun…kind of. We will be doing one experiment that involves a rather indirect way of blowing up balloons, but Grace will also be reviewing and learning more about the scientific method. We’ve started a new science program (the last one we were using was boring and wrong for us, so we’ve thrown it away…isn’t homeschool grand?), so we’ve done a bit of rewinding. 🙂
Social Studies is all about Ancient China for the next couple of weeks. Grace is working on one of those nifty history folders. Never fear, there will be pictures! (We’ll also be doing some Hands on History, but that will come later.)
Other than that? Grace has class at the Science Center this week (always fun!). She’ll also be helping me paint her bedroom. That’s a process everyone should go through. 😉 It’s not really school, but we’re almost finished watching all of the Harry Potter movies. Just one to go! Since Grace tore through all of the books, we decided it would be fun to watch all of the movies together.
That’s what will be keeping us busy this week.
Have a fabulous week!
The reason we’ve been more scattered than usual around here is this:
Yep, we’ve decided to move waaaay out in the country and do life a little differently than what we’re used to. 😉 I’m afraid we’ll continue to be a bit scattered for the next few weeks as we go through the whole moving and adjusting process. Homeschool will, of course, continue…it may just be a bit strange at times. Speaking of homeschool, how awesome is it that Grace got to see the whole house-buying process?!? She was with us at the bank, the real estate office, and the closing. She was bored out of her mind, but at least she’s had some exposure to a task that I found quite daunting. 🙂
It has quickly become quite clear that Grace and I are going to be slack bloggers in the summer. 😉 I think we’ll focus mostly on pictures until we go back to full-time, regular-schedule school. I’m sure Grace’s writing will appear occasionally, too. 🙂
Here’s Grace in a tree…this is how she amuses herself while we’re house hunting. 😀
We have a crazier than normal week ahead. We’ll actually only be having school for 3 days, but we’re going to make them count. 😉
- Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies: We will continue doing review activities in each subject. 🙂
- Field Trips: Grace has a class about kites coming up this week. She’ll be learning to make and fly kites in addition to looking at the science behind kite flying. She also has a survival hike…she’ll be learning how to take care of herself in the woods. We’ll be going to her final class at Young Writers’ Academy this week where she will read her story for the group. (I’m sure the story will be appearing here after her final class.)
- Testing: Yep, the time has come for us to take care of that pesky mandatory testing. We’ll take care of that on Thursday. I have seen Grace grow and learn so much this year…I’m not even a little worried about what those test results say, but we’ll both be glad to have it out of the way. 🙂 To celebrate, we’re taking the day off on Friday. To top off a year well done? Cake, ice cream, and a day at the pool. 😀
- Where do we go from here? We will be homeschooling again next year. (Insert hoots and hollers of glee here.) In order to not suffer from the summer slump (and to get a bit ahead), we’ll continue with our school pursuits as frequently as possible over the summer. We’ll be taking things easy though. We’re looking at short “school days” and afternoons spent swimming, hiking, and goofing off. 😉
Have a great week!
Yes, I have finally created a facebook page just for Homeschool Hijinks. I’m hoping to post updates, pictures, videos, etc. to the Homeschool Hijinks page and use my personal facebook page for, well, personal (non-school-related) stuff. So, go give us a “like,” and we’ll keep you posted on what we’re up to.
I’ve been tinkering with the blog a bit…I’m sure it will be a constant work in progress. I’ve rearranged some of the things over there on the side bar. I’ve also added a tag cloud, so you can easily check out just what you’re interested in. Other new additions….a field trip page for sharing field trip photos and info, a resources page for sharing anything awesome we come across, and a widget on the side that displays what we’re reading. The “what we’re reading” widget includes what I’m reading for fun, what Grace is reading for fun, and what we’re reading for school (which, of course, can also be fun). I think those are all of the changes….for now. 😉
