Sometimes I am just amazed at what a mature, thoughtful, considerate young lady Grace is growing into. Don’t get me wrong…I appreciate her daily! Sometimes, though, she does something that really highlights how awesome she is.
Earlier this week, I agreed to help the Literacy Council with their Summer Literacy Program, a program where adults and children are welcome. The adults are in one room working on literacy skills while the children are in another room reading stories, watching puppet shows, dancing, etc. Well, I will be the first to admit that I am not the ideal candidate for partying with a bunch of small children. Without going into details, I’ll just say that this is not the sort of thing I enjoy. But the Literacy Council was kind of desperate for volunteers, so I agreed.
When I told Grace about it, she, without hesitation, offered to go with me. 🙂 She knew that I wouldn’t go nearly as bonkers with her there, and she jumped right on the opportunity to help (even though a room full of children is far from her cup of tea, too). I was just so very impressed with her willingness to help in a situation she knew she wouldn’t enjoy. What an awesome display of spontaneous selflessness and maturity. I am so very proud of her! 🙂
The kids watching a puppet show about monkeys. 🙂
Doing a crazy monkey dance. Yep, Grace and I chose to be the official picture takers and watchers of the children who weren’t dancing for this portion of the program. 😉
The kids had a blast putting on their own puppet shows. 🙂
Life is getting pretty hectic in these parts. Hectic in some pretty awesome ways, but hectic nonetheless. Due to our super-crazy busy lives, we’re going to start blogging a little differently.
We’re actually planning to update the blog more frequently than we have been, but with shorter posts and more pictures…like micro blogging or some such thing. Of course, we’ll still include Grace’s writing and stories, but we’ll be dropping the “What We’re Up To” and “The Week in Pictures” and whatnot. Instead we’ll be focusing on what Grace is reading and posting pictures more often (but fewer at a time).
We hope you’ll stick with us through the changes! 😀
And please don’t forget that Grace is still raising money for St. Jude’s … she’s doing a great job practicing math with her Mathathon. We’d love your support in helping Grace reach her goal of raising $250 for this great cause.
Grace is raising money for children’s cancer research and practicing her math skills…but she needs your help!
St. Jude’s is an awesome organization that has helped make tremendous progress in the treatment of children’s cancers. As if that weren’t enough, they treat patients regardless of financial situation…without sending huge, scary bills to add to the stress of it all.
Grace is aiming to raise $250.00, and she just knows that some of our fabulous readers want to help out! All you have to do is click this link to go to her little web page for raising funds. You can also click on the banner at the top of this post. Once there, click the orange “Donate Now” in the upper right corner, and you’re on your way to helping a fabulous establishment. (We’ve also included a button/link over there on the right side of our blog.)
And Grace promises to complete every math problem put in front of her for the Mathathon! 😀
One more thing! Don’t have a lot of money for donations? We understand…we don’t either. 😉 But we do want you to know that every little bit helps. Even donations of $1.00 are fabulous and appreciated. 😀
Grace is still spending some quality time at Grandma’s house, but I thought I’d catch up on some picture sharing. Enjoy! 🙂
Grace and I have decided to start doing our best to do some good in our community. This year we will be focusing on using our time, skills, and (a little) money to give back to the community. (We won’t be spending a lot of money because, well, we don’t have a lot of money. 😉 )Our first project was donating supplies to a local women’s shelter. Our next one will be picking up trash in a local park that we go to frequently. You can keep up with our community projects on this part of the blog: Community Good.
If you have any suggestions for our projects, please drop us a comment. Looking for community projects to take on yourself? Feel free to check our list frequently to see if any of our projects are a good fit for you and your family. 😀
