For part of our science enrichment, Grace is working on a unit study about chocolate. Today we had the horrifying task of tasting several types of chocolate to determine our favorites. 😉 Okay, maybe it wasn’t so horrifying. Grace and I both landed on semi-sweet chocolate as a favorite, but now we need your help! We’re supposed to survey people about their favorite types of chocolate, so we’d love for you to take a moment and vote for your favorite type below. (Never fear! There will be graphing and math to come of this. 🙂 )
I recently designed a new game for Nerd in the Brain called Area Puzzler… a fun little review of finding area of squares and rectangles while solving a puzzle. Good times! Grace, as usual, helped me test out the game to check for flaws and typos and things, and she stomped me at my own game! That girl is a puzzle-solving ninja. 😀

Basking in the glory of victory! (Or maybe just looking at me wishing I’d stop taking pictures … who can really say?) 🙂
Anybody else play any awesome educational games this week?
Grace really struggled with subtraction on XtraMath (I think it took 113 days for her to master), but she tore through the multiplication in a blink. 😀 Here’s a shot of her shiny, new certificate to prove it:
Grace is raising money for children’s cancer research and practicing her math skills…but she needs your help!
St. Jude’s is an awesome organization that has helped make tremendous progress in the treatment of children’s cancers. As if that weren’t enough, they treat patients regardless of financial situation…without sending huge, scary bills to add to the stress of it all.
Grace is aiming to raise $250.00, and she just knows that some of our fabulous readers want to help out! All you have to do is click this link to go to her little web page for raising funds. You can also click on the banner at the top of this post. Once there, click the orange “Donate Now” in the upper right corner, and you’re on your way to helping a fabulous establishment. (We’ve also included a button/link over there on the right side of our blog.)
And Grace promises to complete every math problem put in front of her for the Mathathon! 😀
One more thing! Don’t have a lot of money for donations? We understand…we don’t either. 😉 But we do want you to know that every little bit helps. Even donations of $1.00 are fabulous and appreciated. 😀
Grace has been hard at work creating a new game! She spent a lot of time designing cards, writing out rules, test-playing, and revising…and we have a final product: Crazy Colors! It’s a fun and simple game of luck, logic, and strategy. Not that I’m biased or anything, but I think she’s done a fantastic job with her first game. 😀 So awesome that we’ve decided to add it to the Nerd in the Brain store. We’re starting with an introductory price of $1.00, but after a week the price will go up to $2.00, so snag your copy now if you’re so inclined. (Yep, any money made on the game will go to Grace…and Grace’s college fund.) The game is a downloadable printable. Translation: some assembly required. 😉

Nerd in the Brain! I’ve finally decided to take all of my experiences as a teacher (public school, community college, and home school), a math nerd, and a reading nut and squish them together into something awesome (I hope!).
We won’t be posting about Nerd in the Brain too terribly much here…it is a separate thing, after all. I did feel like it was worth a mention for a few reasons though:
Grace is actually taking a pretty big part in this whole thing. She’s helping with ideas, proofreading materials, and testing activities and games. She’s a helper and a guinea pig. 🙂
I’ve decided to add some free resources to Nerd in the Brain. I’m hoping the other home schoolin’ families out there will get some use out of them. (Other teachers, too, of course!) Right now, there is only one game available, but I’m hoping to add something new to the free resources each week.
I like to share resources here…Nerd in the Brain is just one more of ’em. 🙂
We’ll be adding new literature guides and lesson plans (of the non-free variety) every couple of weeks. You may get some use out of those, too. Again, we’re just getting started, but we’ll be adding materials to help with fantasy, science fiction, and dystopian literature. There will also be math and science lessons in the near future.
Nerd in the Brain will do giveaways from time to time. I’ll announce them here so all of you teaching lovelies will have a chance at winning some free loot. 😀
Now I’ll leave you with some pictures of Grace enjoying some Operation War. (That’s the free resource that went up today.)
